The products in the Investigations Series are designed to take children and their families on an in-depth exploration of a particular science topic. For example, in Investigating Autumn, families can do activities to find out more about autumn trees, pumpkins and squash, and apples. In addition to the hands-on science activities, there are suggested books to read, art activities to do, suggestions for keeping a science journal, songs to sing, Internet resources, and directions for making your own board game. There are more than enough ideas included to provide for hours of science fun during a whole month! The whole family, from grandparents to young children, can get involved in exploring science topics.
Young children love to play. Research shows that play contributes to language development, problem solving, and social and emotional skills. Play can also support the development of literacy and mathematics skills.
You can support your child’s play through the use of the activities included in LiteraSci’s Investigations Series. Children can explore and experiment with various hands-on science activities. They can repeat them frequently, bringing new ideas along to try.
Your entire family will have fun with the Investigations activities. Exploring science concepts together in a variety of ways over a long period of time will benefit everyone!

Exploring Nature
Young children are active explorers of the everyday scientific world. They have immense curiosity and want to know “why?” “how come?” and “what would happen if …?”
To find the answers, they will develop their own kinds of experiments shining flashlights in corners, digging in the backyard, and rolling cars down ramps. The activities in the Investigations Series tap into this natural scientific curiosity and use it to build children’s knowledge about the world around them. These science activities:
Build vocabulary as you and your children have conversations during the science activities.
Encourage a “trial and error” approach that lets children learn without worrying about being “wrong.”
Can be done in a variety of different ways to challenge children without letting them become frustrated or bored.
Young children love science and they will eagerly engage in the Investigations activities!
Each Investigations Guidebook is filled with suggestions for literacy and math activities. As your family becomes involved in the science activities, you can learn more about the topic from the books and Internet resources suggested in the guidebook. There are both storybooks and informational texts readily available for you and your child to enjoy together to support language and literacy learning.
Everyday conversations are the foundation for language development. Conversations about the activities help build vocabulary, a key factor in later reading success. The guidebooks suggest vocabulary for you to use and questions to ask.. Writing becomes meaningful and important as you and your child draw and write about your science observations, label diagrams, and record your findings in your science journal.
The science activities also provide opportunities to do math, including counting, measuring, and comparing. The guidebooks suggest questions to help your child think mathematically: "Which group has more?" "How many leaves did you collect?" "How could you sort these objects into groups?"
The family is your child’s first and best teacher! The Investigations Series will provide you with hours of enjoyment together as you explore and learn about interesting science topics. The activities are flexible and open-ended so you never need to worry about doing them “the right way.” You can spend 10 minutes together on one day singing a science song and spend an afternoon together another day figuring out how to build the fastest car ramp.
Your delight in your child’s curiosity and growing knowledge will surprise you every day!
