A $3,800,000 Early Reading First grant from the US Department of Education provided the resources needed to develop, field-test, and refine methods of using young children's fascination with science as a means of enhancing their language and literacy development. The methods developed are based on scientifically based reading research (SBRR) and address the development of oral language, alphabet knowledge, phonemic awareness, print awareness, and writing.
All lessons incorporate literacy skills through reading, including fiction and non-fiction, maps, recipes and other print forms and writing, using journals, class charts and presentations.
All lessons provide directions to build children’s literacy skills as part of the science lesson. Each lesson suggests a book to be read with the children as well as ways to include writing and representing ideas. Computer literacy skills are also included.
